Post No.134
Onam the traditional festival of Kerala and this year it is falling in the month of September. So I thought of including some onam sadya recipes. I will be adding more recipes eventually to this collection. Today I am doing an Erissery with raw Banana and Yam. Erissery is a traditional coconut based gravy dish that is prepared especially on the day of onam. Erisseri is a tasty side dish which can be served with Rice.
Ingredients
250 gram Elephant yam peeled and chopped
2 Raw Banana peeled and chopped
½ tsp chilli powder
¼ tsp Turmeric powder
1 tsp black pepper powder
Salt to taste
For Grinding
1 cup grated coconut
1 tsp cumin seeds
For Tempering
¼ cup Fresh grated coconut
½ tsp Mustard seed
2 dry red chillies cut into small pieces
1 sprig curry leaves
1tbsp coconut oil
Method
Grind the coconut and cumin seed to a fine paste by adding water little by little
In a pan add yam, banana, red chilli powder, turmeric powder, black pepper powder, salt and water. Mix well. Cook until it is done. Lightly mash it with the back of the ladle.
Add the ground coconut paste and let it simmer for 3 to 4 minutes. Adjust the water level and switch off the flame.
In a small pan heat coconut oil and add mustard seeds and red chillies. When the mustard seed splutter add the grated coconut and curry leaves.
Fry the coconut till they turn crunchy and light brown. Switch off and pour the tempering over the Erissery.
Now your delicious Erissery is ready to serve.
Nice recipe, well presented 🙂
