Ja Dai

Post No.130

After Manipur let us travel to Meghalaya- the seven sister state in north eastern India. Meghalaya  means ‘ the abode of clouds’ in sanskrit. Rice is the staple food and is called Ja. This time I made Ja dai a very popular dish among the Khasi community of Meghalaya which is tasty and a healthy recipe. Ja dai is basically rice based dish in which rice is cooked with lentils. It can be served with curd or with any vegetable curry.

½ cup toor dal

1 cup rice

1 tsp ginger chopped

¼ cup onion chopped

Salt to taste

1 tbsp oil

Wash and drain the excess water in the rice and dal

Heat oil in pressure cooker and add chopped onion and chopped ginger.

Cook till it is translucent. Add rice, dal , salt  and 3 cups of water.

Cover with lid and cook till 3 whistles.

Serve hot with extra spoon of ghee
